Which DoorKing Models This Applies To
DoorKing has been around for decades, so Anaheim driveways have a mix of old and new hardware. The welding and fabrication side covers the mid-series and heavy-series operators most of all: the 9150 (older slide gate workhorse), the 9300, the 1601 and 1602 models you’ll find on many Anaheim Hills properties, and the 6300. We also fabricate for the 8050 and 6500 linear and swing configurations.
The gotcha with DoorKing specifics: the gate bracket, hinge plate, and chain idler mounting points are drilled and spaced differently from one series to the next. A hinge from a Mighty Mule setup will not line up on a 1601, and welding a generic bracket on instead of the correct mount just moves the failure point to the gate frame. When we match a part, we use the model label on the operator or the old part’s bolt pattern and center measurements. OEM is the right call when a part is still in production and your gate is stock. A quality aftermarket equivalent often makes more sense when the OEM part has been discontinued, or when the aftermarket version is actually heavier steel than what DoorKing shipped originally. Signs Your DoorKing Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate drags or scrapes within the first few feet of travel. This almost always traces to a failing lower hinge or a cracked weld where the hinge plate meets the post. The gate loses its plane, and the motor works harder every cycle.
- A sharp crack or snap while the gate is moving. That sound is usually a weld failing under tension, or a chain bracket tearing away from the gate frame. If you heard it once, don’t run the gate again until it’s looked at.
- The operator strains and the motor sounds labored. When a weld distorts or a bottom roller bracket shifts, the motor fights misalignment. That extra amperage shortens the life of the motor and the gearbox.
- Visible rust weeping from the hinge or weld seams. In Anaheim, we don’t get coastal salt like Huntington Beach, but we do get decades of irrigation overspray and morning dew working on unprotected steel. Rust at a weld means the connection is losing section thickness.
- The gate sags visibly at the free end when it’s fully open. A gate that’s square only when it’s half-travel means a hinge or bracket has shifted. The longer it runs, the more the frame twists and the more the repair scope grows.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A heavier fabrication job, like rebuilding a post side mount or extending a gate frame end, runs $360 to $520 installed. DIY or Call Us?
Some things you can safely check yourself: visible rust at hinge seams, obvious sag at the free end, and whether the gate is catching on the concrete. Write down what you see and call (424) 395-3381. You can also shut the motor off at the breaker if the gate is binding; waiting on the repair is fine, running the motor against a failing weld is what turns a $280 bracket into a $1,400 operator replacement.
Where DIY goes wrong is the welding itself. A gate hinge and bracket carry hundreds of pounds of steel through thousands of cycles a year. An improper weld, wrong filler, or poor penetration can hold for a month and then fail catastrophically, usually with the gate partially open and a car underneath it. This is the one part of gate work where Victor will tell you plainly: if you don’t weld for a living, this is not the job to learn on. We train for this. Let us do it.

OEM DoorKing hinges installed correctly typically last 12 to 18 years in Anaheim’s dry climate, less if the gate is near lawn sprinklers or on a slope where the motor works harder. Factory welds on the gate frame commonly fail between years 10 and 15, depending on gate weight and cycle count.
In most cases a cracked weld can be ground out and re-welded properly, often stronger than the original, provided the surrounding steel hasn’t rusted thin.
